Christopher's exploration of the portrait has been an ongoing process, though more recently he has focused on painting people using his 'action' method. The brightly saturated portraits, which are primarily of friends and family, vibrate with movement and attempt to really capture the essence of the person.
Christopher has recently begun experimenting with a new body of work in wood.
For these monochromatic pieces, he uses a router and wood burner to etch lines and shapes down into the wood board's surface, creating a kind of inverse relief.
The deliberate physicality of these techniques has been developed as an almost oppositional response to his acrylic painting work, in which he never touches the canvas or uses line -- instead he drips paint in a seemingly random fashion to form compositions.
The routered wood pieces explore his interest in diagrams, symbols and historical imagery and combine to create interwoven fragments of narrative.
